Appearance:
- Cap: Wavy edges when mature
- Color: Chestnut brown when moist, pale tan when dry
- Stem: Whitish
- Bruising: Strong blue reaction when damaged
Often associated with wood chips and mulched areas.
Important Safety Warning
Many dangerous mushrooms look similar to psilocybin-containing species. Some toxic mushrooms can cause:
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure
- Severe poisoning
- Death
Examples of toxic lookalikes include certain Galerina and Cortinarius species, which can resemble small brown mushrooms (“LBMs”).
Even experienced foragers can make fatal mistakes. Proper identification requires:
- Spore print analysis
- Microscopic examination
- Expert mycological knowledge
Never rely on internet photos alone for identification.
Key Visual Characteristics Often Mentioned
While not universal, some psilocybin mushrooms may show:
